Among Five Honored by VTS


Bishop Charles vonRosenberg received the Doctor in Divinity, honoris causa, on Oct. 19, 1999, during the Annual Academic Convocation at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va.

Also receiving honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees were the Rt. Rev. Abe Samuel Adedayo, Bishop of Ekiti in The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and the Most Rev. Frank Griswold, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Receiving the Doctor of Humane Letters degree were Mary Tanner, British author, academic and ecumenist and Gen. Colin Powell, chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff (ret.).

Bishop vonRosenberg received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1974. Following his ordination to the priesthood in 1975, he served as rector or vicar of several churches before becoming Canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

Through his involvement with the World Mission Program Group, vonRosenberg organized and led mission groups to Haiti. In addition, he has been involved in the activities of the national Church as a clerical deputy to the national convention in 1991 and 1997. Currently serving on the Benefits Research Advisory Committee of the Church Pension Fund, he formerly served on the national Conference of Diocesan Executives.

Peter James Lee, Chairman of the Seminary’s Board of Trustees and Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia read from the citation: “In all your ministry, you have earned a reputation as a person of mature and thoughtful faith, commending Jesus Christ honestly and concretely to others. You are a teacher who is connected to Scripture and to the real issues of real people.”
