Grant to The Presiding Bishops Fund for World Relief recently sent SafeSpace, an organization operating in Sevier, Cocke, and Jefferson counties, $5,000. Historically, SafeSpace has offered shelter to women and children of domestic violence. With this grant, SafeSpace hopes to develop a stronger education program both to help prevent abuse and to teach women that they do not need to remain in abusive situations. Among other activities, SafeSpace plans to teach sixth-graders about healthy relationships and that violence is unacceptable and about healthy relationships. Bishop Tharp, chair of the PBF, says of the new SafeSpace Project, This new project is helping to break the cycle of violence by prevention and education. It is hoped that with the monies provided from the [PBF] the children of domestic violence can and will be educated so that they can live happier and healthier lives. The Episcopal Appalachian Ministries also endorses SafeSpace as a viable opponent to domestic violence in East Tennessee. For information about SafeSpace, call 423-453-9254. |
