Doty Accepts Call to be Archdeacon by Alice Clayton font face="Times New Roman, Times, serif" size="+1">The Rev. Michael Doty, rector of St.Paul's, Athens, has been called to the position of Archdeacon with the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee by Bishop Charles G. vonRosenberg.
An Archdeacon is a priest who serves on the administrative staff of the Bishop. In his new post, Doty will have responsibility for all areas of mission --local and foreign. He will work with mission congregations, Area Mission Teams, new mission development and world mission. "I am delighted to announce that I have issued a call to the Rev. Michael Doty and that he has accepted that call," said Bishop vonRosenberg. "I am impressed by the concentration of Michael's attention, energy, and effort on areas of small church ministry and mission. I am sure he will serve the diocese well." Doty will be reassigned to the Diocesan House in Knoxville. A native of Greeneville, Tenn., he has served as rector of St. Paul's for nearly six years. During that time, he has been active in the Athens community as a member of the Kiwanis Club and as secretary and treasurer of the Athens Area Council for the Arts. He participated in the Athens Community Theater as a member and a performer. Doty was active in the Athens Area Ministerial Association and served in the Ministerial Association Chaplain Corps at the Athens Regional Medical Center. He received a M.Div. from The University of the South, Sewanee in 1990 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990. He served at St. Thomas, Elizabethton prior to his tenure at St. Paul's. He received his Doctor of Ministry from The University of the South in 1997. Doty has served on Bishop and Council and is the immediate past president of the Standing Committee. He has been a member of the Mission Task Force and has served on the board of directors of the Center for Missions in Small Churches. He is a former director of Camp Gailor Maxon and a member of the Board of Visitors to the School of Theology of The University of the South. He served on the Consecration Committee for Bishop vonRosenberg and is a member of the Opportunity Fund Committee and the William E. Sanders Scholarship Fund Committee. He began his new assignment March 8. He, his wife Pam and son Isaac plan to move to the Knoxville area at the conclusion of this school year.
