Obituaries The Rev. Dr. Richard Cureton The Rev. Dr. Richard Cureton died Feb. 2, 2000, of lung cancer at his home in Chattanooga. A retired radiologist, he was serving as priest associate at St. Peters, Chattanooga, at the time of his death. He was ordained to the priesthood in April 1978. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, and three children.
Winnie Hale Walker, 80, of Monteagle, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, of apparent congestive heart failure. She and her husband, the late J. Ernest Walker Jr., were well known across the state by Episcopalians for their "loving hospitality" during the years they spent at the DuBose Conference Center in Monteagle. She was also the head resident of Trezevant Hall at St. Andrews/Sewanee Episcopal School from 1982 to 1994. A tireless worker with a deep commitment to the church, she influenced countless people during her years at Dubose from 1956 until 1978. "She and her husband had a wonderful ministry," said the Rt. Rev. William Sanders, retired bishop of East Tennessee. "They developed the conference center for the whole diocese and offered loving hospitality to decades of young people and adults alike." People who frequented DuBose for conferences, meetings and camps recalled that not only did she oversee all of the kitchens operations, she also did almost everything else -- including painting the bell tower, repairing the plumbing and mowing the grounds. And she did all of this as a volunteer. Survivors include her son, J. Ernest Walker III of Monteagle; her daughter, Janet Oehmig of Crystal River, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Sam Sloan of South Pittsburg and Mrs. Howard Elliott of Crossville. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a son, William Hale Walker. The family asked that memorial contributions be made to St. Andrews/Sewanee Episcopal School.
