Bishop Sanders Scholars Named

Four students have been chosen as recipients of the William Evan Sanders Scholarship Fund this year. The fund, set up in honor of the Rt. Rev. William Sanders, first Bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee, provides scholarships for minority students.

Alex Porte, son of John and Manel Porte of Cleveland Tennessee, is a 2000 graduate of Cleveland High School and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He plans to study computer engineering. He is an honor student and winner of Excellence in Community Service, Who's Who in American High Schools and the Dream Keeper's Award. In high school he participated in the Technology Club, Beta Club, Harvest Foundation, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Chess Club. He was a part of the Cross Country Track Team.

Jonathan Harris, son of Henry and Cola Harris of Ooltewah attends Austin Peay State University where he is studying music/vocal performance. He is a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He is active in Phi Mu Alpha, serving as chapter warden and represents is dormitory in the Residence Hall Association. He was selected Most Creative by that organization. He plans to purse a second degree in computer science and to audition for opera roles and choruses.

Germaine Dunn, daughter of Elwood and the Rev. Matilda Dunn of Chattanooga, is attending Amherst College. Her immediate goal is to acquire a solid undergraduate education with her sights on pursuing professional studies in journalism or information technology. She has served as an intern with the Children's Defense Fund and as a volunteer at Jessie House, a family shelter. Her many activities in high school included Paidea Honor Society and the Tennessee Governor's School for the Humanities. She is a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Susan Lorraine Austin, daughter of Janet Austin of Germantown, is a student at the University of Tennessee where she is studying geography and intends to pursue a career in education at the college level. She attends St. Michael and All Angels and is a resident at Tyson House. She is the recipient of several honors including membership in the Golden Key National Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She is on the Dean's List and is the recipient of the African American Achievers Scholarship. She is active at Tyson House and as a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma Service Sorority and Sigma Kappa Sorority.
