Ministry Models for Small Congregations

by the Rev. Susanna Metz
On a picture-perfect weekend in October, small-church clergy and laity gathered at the DuBose Conference Center in Monteagle, Tenn., for Gathering 2000 sponsored by the Center for Ministry in Small Churches. This conference, including participants from six dioceses, featured four presenting teams from small congregations. The teams shared stories of their particular ministries and then engaged the listeners in discussion.

LaDonna Wind, Coordinator for Evangelism and Congregational Development from the Diocese of Kentucky, was the keynote speaker. Her enthusiasm and passion for the small church was evident as she shared stories of small churches she’s worked with over the years. She also challenged clergy and laity to explore new models of ministry together so that our baptismal promise to spread God’s word can continue to be strengthened.

John Smith, retired Bishop of West Virginia, led a Bible study and discussion each morning that focused on ministry. He also gave a plenary workshop on ministry models from the ground up. He dispelled many of the myths that have grown up around “baptismal ministry” and showed how identifying the gifts of each member of the congregation can build a healthy church.

The Diocese of East Tennessee was well represented by Bishop Charles vonRosenberg and Archdeacon Michael Doty, members of the CMSC Board of Directors, as well as clergy and laity from several diocesan small congregations. St. James’, Greeneville, sent five members including interim rector, Peggy Blanchard; a wonderful team!

A festival Eucharist on Friday night included music especially accessible for small congregations. Conference participants particularly enjoyed our providing a focus for the conference around the Eucharist as well as introducing some new music. Isaac Blevins, a member of St. John the Baptist, Battle Creek, was the cantor and a small-church bell choir from the United Church of Christ, Belvidere, Tenn., played a special prelude to set the tone for a glorious celebration.

Gathering 2001 is scheduled for November 8-10 at the DuBose Conference Center. The CMSC is planning another interactive program that will feature evangelism topics, especially reaching out to young adults.

The Rev. Susanna Metz is the CMSC Executive Director.
