YAC Plans Diocesan Youth Events for 2001 The Diocesan Youth Action Council is a group of young people and their leaders selected to plan youth events for the diocese. Under the leadership of Patricia Tanzer Askew, Diocesan Youth Ministries Facilitator, the group helps to set guidelines for Happening and the various retreats held in the diocese as well as to plan the details of the Diocesan Youth Event and participation in the Province IV youth events. At a recent meeting, the young people made plans for youth participation in the Seventeenth Diocesan Convention. All were concerned that the youth be a visible presence at the Convention and that they contribute to the proceedings, interacting with the delegates and participating in worship. The Diocesan Youth Event will take place during Convention in Knoxville. Youth in grades 6-12 and their adult leaders are invited to take part February 10-11, 2001. More details will be sent to youth leaders as the time draws closer. Also in the works for 2001 are Happening #49, to take place in the Chattanooga area in April, and a summer service project in June. For more information on youth events, contact Patricia Askew via eMail: patricia@etdiocese.com or phone 423-886-6538. _____________________ South East Diocesan Youth Take a Road Trip to DuBose by Anna Lockhart Teens from at least five different churches in the Chattanooga area stayed the weekend at the Dubose Conference Center on Monteagle Mountain, near Sewanee, Tennessee. The youth arrived at the Center by bus on Saturday, November 11 and returned to their home churches the next day. My group left from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chattanooga. We drove for about an hour on a school bus to the Dubose Conference Center. We settled in, and then we played a game with the whole group. After that, we had the choice of staying at the Center or going on a trip into Sewanee. I was in the group that took the trip and we shopped at the bookstore and walked around campus. Back at the center, others played frisbee or anything of their choice. After eating in the dining hall at 6 p.m., we had guitar-player/singer, Fran McKendree, perform for us, and we all enjoyed him a lot. The day ended with Compline and 12:00 lights-out. In the morning after breakfast and Eucharist, we packed up and went back home. It was a fun experience and everyone had a great time. What an exciting road trip! Anna Lockhart is a parishioner at St. Paul’s, Chattanooga. |
