From the Bishop
Dear Friends,
My round of visitations recently took me to St. Marks, Copperhill. In fact, I was there on the First Sunday of Advent. There happened to be no baptisms or confirmations on that particular occasion. However, at the suggestion of The Reverend Robert Reuss - the extended supply priest at St. Marks - he presented the entire congregation gathered for the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. This is a significant moment in the history of St. Marks Church. No resident priest lives there now, and there really are no prospects for a resident priest in the foreseeable future. In addition, as I indicated, the particular Sunday of my visit was the first one of a new church year. For several reasons, therefore, the service involving a Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows seemed especially appropriate. Indeed, it was a powerful witness and experience for the congregation and for me. Fully ninety percent of those gathered came forward to reaffirm their baptismal vows, and as I observed to them, "Who says we dont have an altar call in the Episcopal Church!". The particular experiences in Copperhill may have been unique, but my reactions have been repeated over and over again. I am so very grateful for the life and vitality of the churches in East Tennessee, in all their unique manifestations. In addition, I am humbled by the faithful commitment of the Episcopalians in this part of Gods kingdom. And, finally, I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving as your Bishop. Faithfully
yours, |
