Appalachian Ministries Resources Directory 2000 Points to Needs

Appalachian School Supply Program

Campbell County - There are many children in Campbell County who cannot afford school supplies. It is an easy way to bring help and to experience the mission of the church.

According to the Appalachian Ministries Resource Directory 2000, your spirits would be lifted to see the joy of the children who held your gift of school supplies in their arms with loving care in anticipation of a new school year. In 1999, more than 600 students from low and very low income families in Appalachian counties received school supplies thanks to the generosity of Episcopalians.

It is time again to prepare for this project! Appalachian Ministries is asking the children and youth of the diocese to help by adopting the “School Supply Program” as an outreach mission.

Below is a list of much needed school supplies. Church school children, youth groups and ECWs can help by donating supplies or, if they prefer, a monetary gift. Call Patty Chase, a volunteer with the Campbell County Chapter at 423-562-2370 or 865-524-0551 to pick up your collected school supplies, or deliver them to the Diocesan House in Knoxville. Send monetary gifts to Patty Chase at 511 East Central, Lafollette, TN 37766.

Feeding Hungry School Children

Children and youth can learn missions by doing with this project to feed elementary school children during the summer by simply tithing $1 per day.

The children enrolled in elementary schools in Campbell County enjoy lunch time -- a time to eat a hot meal, be with friends, chat with buddies. At one school 148 students out of the 151 qualify for financial assistance. For these 148 students lunch is provided free. Their parents are relieved of the burden of having enough food to pack lunches or providing lunch money of $1 per day.

What happens during the summer? Parents suddenly need $20 per child per month to feed their children a minimal meal. The needed money will not be there. Families will look to the Food/Life Services of Campbell County for additional food assistance. Your donation can provide food for families in need.

The purpose of this project is to give children and youth an opportunity to learn about mission, about reaching out to others in need. It is a good outreach project for Lent, for Vacation Church School, for summer Sunday School Activity or for a Youth Mission Project.
