Spiritual Life Committee Searches by Anne KoehlerSpiritual Life Committee On March 24, in the beautiful woodland setting of the Church of the Resurrection in Loudon, the Spiritual Life committee of the diocese began its search for the ways it can best serve as both a spiritual presence and a resource for the spirituality of individuals, parishes, and the diocese. The meeting first touched spirituality of its members, and then addressed the questions of how to formulate its larger public mission and focus. It was agreed that a personal spiritual component is an important ingredient in the meetings. The Reverend Paige Bucholtz led a series of enriching exercises. Members visualized the presence of Jesus, experienced centered prayer, and meditated on a passage from Isaiah. Each exercise was followed by journaling and discussion. They also shared reasons for choosing to serve, and finally, the communion of a silent Eucharist. After lunch, the committee discussed its presence as a spiritual resource in the diocese, and its purpose of encouraging spirituality. Carolyn Dicer gave an informal history of past activities and direction for the future. Margaret Mullen, chair, advised that the committee is, in effect, putting "new wine in new wine skins." Its purpose will be more diversified geographically and spiritually. The committee is "A & A"-- advocates for spirituality and accountable to the people we serve." The committee's mission was tentatively articulated (after discussion) as being "spiritual nurture of all orders of ministry." Being invited to volunteer hopes and wants for accomplishing the mission of this committee, members offered several suggestions for encouraging communication, publicizing activities, promoting involvement , maintaining a presence and serving needs recognized and as yet unrecognized. Small subgroups were formed, which will meet to gather information, to discuss directions, and to refine the mission. The next full committee meeting will be August 4 in Knoxville. The March 24 meeting was attended by the Rev. Margaret Mullen, chair; the Rev. George Glazier, Jr.; Ms. Pam Park; Ms. Rosie Abrams; Mr. Jim Orr; Ms. Liz Johnson; Ms. Anne Koehler; Ms. Carolyn Dicer; the Rev. Paige Bucholtz; and .Ms. Jeanette Cureton. |
