Offices
to be Filled at February Convention
The University of the South Trustee
- Lida K. Barrett, Church of the Ascension, Knoxville.
Nominator: Ladson F. Mills III, Rector, Church of the Ascension,
Knoxville. She was a member of the Mathematics Department of the University
of Tennessee, 1961-1980 and Head of the Department, 1973-1980.
She was Associate Provost at Northern Illinois University, Dean of Arts
and Sciences at Mississippi State University. She was the Senior Associate
in the Education and Human Resources Division of the National Science
Foundation, and she went to West Point Naval Academy as professor of
Mathematics.
Lida Barrett is a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of the Church of
the Ascension.
- Shawn G. Graham, St. Andrew's Church, Maryville
Nominator: The Rev. Martha P. Sterne, Rector, St. Andrew's, Maryville.
He is a graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee and a graduate
of the University of Mississippi School of Law. While living in Middle
Tennessee, he served as a member of the vestry of St. Barnabas Episcopal
Church in Tullahoma. He currently serves as a member of the diocesan
stewardship committee.
Shawn Graham and his wife Anna are active volunteers for Sewanee, hosting
Sewanee Club of East Tennessee gatherings; he also serves as a captain
for his class.
He is an assistant public defender for the 5th District (Blount County).
- David K. Kalwinsky, M.D., St. John's Church, Johnson City
Nominator: Dwight Runge, St. John's, Johnson City. He is a pediatrician,
cancer researcher and educator. He was Associate Professor at the University
of Tennessee, Memphis and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He
has been Professor of Pediatrics at East Tennessee State University
since 1990 and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics since 2000.
He has been active in the Episcopal Church in West and East Tennessee.
He was active at Holy Communion, Memphis, and served on the diocesan
evangelism committee.
At St. John's, Johnson City, he has served on the Vestry , been an usher,
a member of the choir, and a part of the men's fellowship. He has served
on the Rector Search Committee and the Building Committee and as chairman
of the Memorials Committee. He was a convention delegate 1993-2000 and
served as Keyman and Vice President of the East Tennessee Laymen's Conference.
- Prestine C. Huckabay, St. Paul's Church, Chattanooga
Nominator: The Rev. Joseph Ballard, Rector, St.James', Knoxville.
Prestine Crosby Huckabay served 7 years as Chair of the School of Theo-
logy Committee for The University of the South, which raised money for
the construction of the Chapel of the Apostles. She has previously served
as a Sewanee Trustee rep on the Community Relations Committee.
Prestine served on the "Celebrate the Mountain" committee,
which kicked off the Capital Funds Drive.
She was co-chair of the 15th Diocesan Convention. Presently she serves
on the Bishop Tharp Legacy Committee, the UTC Campus Ministry Board,
and in her parish, she is a DOCC facilitator, a chalice bearer, LEV,
and editor of the newsletter.
Prestine and her husband, the Rev. Hunter Huckabay, have three sons
and six grandchildren.
Ecclesiastical Court
- William Richard Pratt, St. Clare's Church, LaFollette
Nominator: The Rev. William Nevils, Priest-in-Charge, St. Clare's,
LaFollette, and its Annual Meeting. He is a founding member and communicant
of St.Clare's Church in LaFollette. He is a member of Knoxville Urban
Ministries, a graduate of EFM and a member of the Mid-East Area Mission
Team.
He received both Bachelor of Science and Law degrees from the University
of Arkansas. He was a distinguished military graduate and served 4 ½
years in the U.S. Army First Cavalry Division as a Chief Military Justice
in the Judge Advocate General's Corp.
In East Tennessee he has served as an Assistant District Attorney in
Knox, Fentress, Morgan, Scott, Campbell, Claiborne and Union counties
. In 1994 he started his own law firm with two partners Cantrell,
Pratt and Varsalona. His practice focuses on family, domestic and criminal
law.
He serves as chairman of the board of REACHS, a not-for-profit organization
in Campbell County which provides housing and jobs for the mentally
handicapped, health services for the disadvantaged and a whole network
of social services for the economically distressed.
William and his wife, Marita, adopted three children. They have three
grandchildren.
- John Patrick Mendez, St. James Church, Knoxville
Nominator: The Rev. Joseph H. Ballard, Jr., Rector, St. James',
Knoxville. He is a cradle Episcopalian who has served the church in
several different capacities. At St. James', he is a thurifer, EYC advisor,
lector, usher, children's chapel leader and nursery worker. He is on
the St. James' feeding team at the Volunteer Ministry Center. He represents
St. James' on the Board of Directors of Knoxville Inner City Churches
United for People.
John has served on the vestry of two parishes and served as co-junior
warden. He is currently serving on the Standing Committee of the Diocese.
His term expires in February, 2001.
Standing Committee
- Barbara Griego, St. Clare's Church, LaFollette
Nominator: The Rev. William Nevils, Priest-in-Charge, St. Clare's,
LaFollette, and its Annual Meeting. She is a communicant of St. Clare's.
She and her husband, Leo, were received in the Episcopal Church in 1980.
She has been active in the Saturday Ministry program at St. Clare's
which offers hands-on help for those in need. She has been supportive
of the Appalachian Ministry Resource Team's efforts at the White Oak
Project. She retired in December and plans to work with the adult literacy
program in Campbell County.
Barbara has three living children. The Griegos have five grandchildren.
- The Rev. Jocelyn Bell, Christ Church, Chattanooga
Nominator: The South East Clericus, parishes of South East Area.
She has been rector of Christ Church, Chattanooga since 1999. She served
on the Mission Strategy Task and is presently a member of the South
East Area Mission Team. In the Diocese of Missouri she was a member
of the Diocesan Council, chair of the Mission Group for Congrega- tional
Development, member of the Diocesan Christian Education Committee, and
the Committee on Campus Ministry.
- The Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett, St. Elizabeth's Church, Farragut
Nominator: Vestry of St. Elizabeth's Church, Farragut. He has
served as rector of St. Elizabeth's, Farragut, since 1999. Previously,
he served as rector of St. Peter's, Sycamore, IL, and as assistant at
St. Peter's, St. Louis, MO. In the Diocese of Chicago, he served as
Dean of the Rockford Deanery and as a member of Bishop and Council.
In the Diocese of Missouri, he served as a member of the Commission
on Ministry and on Bishop and Council.
In this diocese, he serves as on the Bishop's Theology Committee and
the Clergy Family Nurture and Support Committee.
Bishop and Council
- Sharon Monroe, Church of the Good Shepherd, Knoxville
Nominator: The Rev. A. Henry Swann, Rector, Church of the Good
Shepherd, Knoxville. She is a cradle Episcopalian. She and her husband
Terry attend Good Shepherd where she is on the Vestry. She is a member
of the Altar Guild, treasurer of the ECW, chair of the Memorials Committee,
a lay reader and an acolyte. She has previously served on the Budget
Committee.
Sharon is presently serving as the Nominations Chair of the Diocesan
ECW and is completing a one-year term on Bishop and Council. She is
eligible for re-election.
Sharon is a commercial insurance underwriter/marketing representative.
- Dr. James S. Morris, St. Francis of Assisi, Ooltewah
Nominator: St. Francis of Assisi, Ooltewah, Mission Council and
the Rev. Buckley Robbins, Vicar. Dr. James S. Morris is a cradle Episcopalian
and a charter member of St. Francis of Assisi, Ooltewah. He is a graduate
of Vanderbilt and from TVA.
He has served on the Mission Council, is a former Senior Warden, a Church
School Teacher, Chalice Bearer, Usher, Greeter, and Endowment Committee
Chair. He served as a Deputy to General Convention and as a member of
the Thorne Sparkman Planning Commit- tee, the Legacy Society Committee,
and the Board of the Center for Ministry in Small Churches. He is an
EFM graduate.
He has previously served as Senior Warden of Grace Church, Chattanooga,
a member of Bishop and Council, a member of ECSET Board, and Vice Chairman
of the Board of Trustees of St. Nicholas School.
He is married to Betty and has three sons and five grandsons.
- The Rev. John H. Bonner, III, Christ Church, South Pittsburg
Nominator: The Rev. C. Perry Scruggs, Good Shepherd, Lookout
Mountain. He is rector of Christ Church and has served the diocese as
a member of the Clergy Family Support Committee, the Episcopate Committee
and the South East Area Mission Team. He has served on the board of
ECSET, the board of St. Barnabas, and the UTC Campus Ministry Board.
He is serving on the boards of Grandview Medical Center and the National
Cornbread Festival. He is the convener of the South Pittsburg/Marion
County Ministerial Association and is on the board of the Marion County
Community Ministry.
John is married to Debbie and they have three children and three grandchildren.
