Diocesan Camp & Conference Center Update

Finally, all the surveys are completed, the titles checked and the papers signed. As of the last week of May, the Manley property on the Tennessee River near Watts Bar belongs to the Diocese of East Tennessee. That property will be developed into a Diocesan Camp and Conference Center.

To celebrate this event, the Diocesan Camp and Conference Center Board is inviting the whole diocese out for a series of day camps this summer to see the property, have a day of fun boating, swimming, hiking, picnicking, etc. According to the Rev. Hugh Jones, “Like the Hebrews coming into the Promised Land (Joshua 1:1-5), we will claim the property as our own! We will cross the Jordan (well, Tennessee River) and take possession of the land in our hearts!”

Day Camps
Each day camp will begin at 10 a.m. and there will be organized tours of the property, crafts, supervised swimming and boating, and a group Eucharist at 6 p.m. followed by a barbecue. Everyone is encouraged to join in the organized events or just explore on his/her own. Bring your own lunch.

HOW TO REGISTER YOUR CHURCH

  1. Decide on a date for your congregation to attend a daycamp. Available dates are:
    June 16, June 17, June 23, June 24
    July 14, July 15, July 21, July 22
(The hope is that your church will come together, but encourage folks to register for another date if yours is inconvenient for them. Also, please provide chaperones as needed for youth and children.)
  2. Call Diocesan House to register your date (865-521-2900) Speak to Alice Clayton or Rosemary Davenport.
  3. Publicize the event in your church and get an accurate count of those planning to eat supper there following the Eucharist. Each church has a poster to hang and a bulletin insert to be reproduced. Please fill in the blanks on both. A registration form is also available.
  4. Call Diocesan House (Alice or Rosemary) with the number of people coming from your church one week before the scheduled date.
  5. For more information, call the Rev. Hugh Jones at 423-842-1342.

The only cost involved is for the barbecue. It will be $5 per person ($15 per family, max) -- to be collected at the event.
