Camp BJ Provides Life-Changing Experience by Kristin Bradbury While at camp, we work on backstrokes and friendship bracelets and finding berries. We have the famous Counselor Hunt, and a dance. We enjoyed a field trip, a bonfire, and a merry visit from Bishop vonRosenberg. Yet, the most heartwarming time at camp is when the campers are leaving. Often times, the faces that arrived sullen or shy are stained with happy tears when they leave. After the hundredth hug, each camper leaves with enough clothes to get him or her through the winter. They have what the children call Christmas, -- the day that they are presented with clothes collected by churches throughout the year. The children, eyes wide with disbelief, are urged to pick whatever clothes they would like to have. The ministry of Christs love is touchingly evident as we celebrate Christmas in July. Camp Billy Johnson has taught me how the efforts of a few dedicated people can make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate. The children appreciate even the smallest things that the counselors do for them. The message that I cherish most is one in a shy little voice that says, I miss you, Kristin, which tells me I have successfully provided more than a week at camp and mere clothes to a child. Camp Billy Johnson is truly making a difference in the world. Camp Billy Johnson Website: www.campbillyjohnson.home.att.net |
