Sixty Years of Ordained Ministry is Not Enough

by Sarah Moore
The Rev. John Howard Rhys, Th.D., professor emeritus at the School of Theology and currently priest-in-charge at St. John the Baptist Church in South Pittsburg, celebrated the Eucharist in the Chapel of the Apostles recently in observance of the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Rhys, a native of Canada, was professor of New Testament at the School of Theology from 1953-1983.

Made an honorary canon in the Diocese of East Tennessee in 1997, Rhys, 84, travels from Sewanee to South Pittsburg each Sunday to serve the church with the Rev. Susanna Metz, director of contextual education at Sewanee also assigned to that cure.

Before moving to Sewanee with his wife Peggy, Rhys served churches in Canada, North Carolina, New York City, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of McGill University, Diocese of Montreal Theological School, and the General Theological Seminary from which he has a S.T.B., S.T.M. and Th.D.

Sarah Moore is Associate Director of Communications at The University of the South.
