Wanted: 20 High School Seniors The University of the South is seeking 20 academically talented rising high school seniors of racial minority background to study math and science on a full scholarship this summer. In its fourth year, the Bridge Program in Math and Science is offered June 23-July 13. The three-week residential experience offers teaching by University faculty, use of Sewanees facilities, computerized classrooms, and a 10,000-acre campus in mid-state Tennessee that provides ample opportunity for research and recreation. Current undergraduate students live with participants in the residence hall and assist the professors. Sponsored by the duPont Fund, the 20 students chosen will receive free room, board and tuition. The Math Experience will introduce college-level calculus. The Science Experience is physics, an introduction to fractals and chaos. The program includes numerous outdoor experiences for the entire group such as hiking the university trails, exploring caves, and natural features of the campus domain located on the Cumberland Plateau. We are trying to fill a two-fold need, said Director Mary Priestly. To provide a research-rich experience for minority students interested in careers in science and mathematics, and to attract such students to Sewanee, increasing our campus diversity. Leaders of the Episcopal Church founded the University of the South in 1858. Fondly known as Sewanee, it is consistently ranked among the top small liberal arts colleges in the country. Sewanee has 1,330 undergraduate students pursuing bachelors degrees, 100 theological students studying at the graduate School of Theology, and serves more than 10,000 people annually through Christian education extension programs, EFM (Education for Ministry) and DOCC (Disciples of Christ in Community).
