698 backpacks given for Appalachian youth

Under the banner of the Appalachian School Supplies project, parishes this summer donated 698 backpacks stuffed with all the supplies Campbell County children will need to begin the fall term.

The featured school this year, Stony Fork, is in an isolated mountain community and has 50 students in grades K-12. All the students qualify for the free lunch program.

When Harry Chase and Gary Dicer delivered the backpacks to Stony Fork on August 7, they toured the school, which had been painted this summer by inmates at Brushy Mountain State Prison. Stony Fork also has a new computer lab for the high school students to use in a distance-learning program.

“What a blessing it is to be involved in this Diocesan mission project,” said Carolyn Dicer, Bishop’s Deputy for Program, on behalf of the Appalachian Ministries Committee. “Your efforts are deeply appreciated.”
