attracts media eye

Consent vote on gay bishop,
rites to bless same-sex unions
take, hold center stage

The 74th General Convention had as its theme, “Engage God’s Mission: Receive, Repent, Reconcile and Restore.”

However, two other actions were most in evidence: Respect and Restraint. As those who were witness to the convention held July 30 - August 8 in Minneapolis attempted to summarize its extraordinary events in conversation and in coverage, these words arose with great frequency.

The Rt. Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg, third Bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee, asked God’s blessing on the new home of the diocesan staff near Lovell Road in West Knoxville on Saturday, July 26. The Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett, rector of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Farragut, arranged the liturgy for the blessing, and the Rev. Canon Chris Chase, campus minister at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, assisted in the service. Dozens of clergy and parishioners from around the region gathered with the staff and with contracting and design firm representatives for the celebration, which included a reception and tour.

Grace Point thriving
on guest variety, volume

A quick look at the Grace Point Camp and Retreat Center calendar reveals very few dates lacking reservations.

“The camp has become a grace-filled and meaningful part of so many of our parishioners’ lives,” said the Rev. Bo Lewis, camp vicar, “especially given the limitations in its facilities and its services. The variety of people requesting information is remarkable.”

Two Appalachian ministries
designated Jubilee Centers

A modern-day wagon train hit the trail May 14 as more than 30 people loaded into a dozen or so vehicles and started up I-75 to Campbell County. The official purpose of this Appalachian Pilgrimage was to witness designation of two organizations as Jubilee Centers: the Mountain Community Parent Resource Center in the White Oak community and the Mountain Women’s Exchange in Jellico.
