DUBOSE CONFERENCE CENTER, Monteagle

Richard A. Young, executive director of DuBose Conference Center, has been appointed executive director of Waycross Episcopal Camp and Conference Center, which was founded in 1957 in Morgantown, Ind. Bishop Catherine Waynick of the Diocese of Indianapolis will commission Young at the Diocesan Convention, which is Oct. 16-17. He will begin the assignment January 1, 2004. “I can’t think of a better place to continue my career in the hospitality ministry,” he said. While at DuBose, Young established an environmental education program, conducted a capital campaign and led the planning for new facility construction.

GOOD SHEPHERD, Knoxville

Excerpted from a recent parish newsletter: Just for today, I will try to live through this day only … I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime. … Just for today, I will try to strengthen my mind. … I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. … Just for today, I will be agreeable. I will talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody but myself. … Just for today, I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as as I give to the world, so the Father will give to me.

CAMP GAILOR-MAXON, Monteagle

Camp Gailor-Maxon, the summer camp that has been at DuBose Conference Center since 1946, wrapped up its 2003 season July 5th. More than 200 campers from across Tennessee participated in the one-week sessions that ranged from recent high school graduates to rising fourth-graders. Chapel programs and discussion groups filled the mornings, and afternoons were dedicated to physical activities and events. Evenings brought skits, counselor hunts and other activities. Campers also enjoyed a ropes course, swimming, hiking and rafting. A banquet and dance wrapped things up. This year’s theme, “Finding God in Others,” provided tools to enable campers to see Christ in others and allow others to more easily find Christ in them.

ST. TIMOTHY, Signal Mountain

Excerpts from a recent “Kathryn’s Corner” column in the parish newsletter by the Rev. Kathryn Mathewson, associate: “We may have been taught as children to recite prayer, but we didn’t get a very good education on how to pray. Prayer is not an incantation for God to conjure up a magic act. Prayer is not a begging to Santa Claus. Prayer is not an ATM machine where we can punch up God’s number and get a handful of what we want. Prayer demands that we listen more than we speak – that we watch and wait. But mostly prayer is putting all our trust in God’s hands.”

GOOD SAMARITAN, Knoxville

An idea seen in a recent parish newsletter: Good Samaritan is putting together a directory of all church activities, from the chili cook-off to the choir, to give parishioners and especially newcomers a complete picture of the great fellowship opportunities available in the parish.

ST. PAUL, Athens

A “funny” seen in a recent parish newsletter: A little girl became restless as the preacher’s sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, “Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?”
