THE 4-POINTS PICTOGRAPH is a reproduction of a buffalo hide painted with a feathered circle pattern by members of the Sioux. The outline of the design was scratched into the surface and the color applied with a stylus of bone or wood. This design likely was painted by women, who tended toward more stylized symbolic or purely decorative patterns, while men often painted stories in pictograph form. |
