PAUL, ATHENS
— Seen in the parish newsletter: While walking along the sidewalk in front
of his church, a minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made
his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his son’s playmates
had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed,
they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made
ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister’s son was chosen to
say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version
of what he thought his father always said: “Glory be unto the Faaaatheer,
and unto the Sonnn … and into the hole he gooooooes.” ST MATTHEW, DAYTON — Seen in the parish newsletter: Prayer is the exhaling of the spirit of man and the inhaling of the Spirit of God. ST. ANDREW, MARYVILLE — Seen in the parish newsletter and reprinted in other parish newsletters: An elder in the Cherokee nation was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One wolf is mean-spirited and filled with fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-doubt, resentment, lies and false pride. The other wolf is gentle in spirit and filled with trust, hope, humility, generosity, friendship, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person.” The children thought a moment, picturing the wolves fighting. One child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old man replied, “The one you feed.” |
