WHEREAS, We in this diocese uphold the unity of the Church and go about our work of worship and service in the name of Jesus Christ; and

WHEREAS, we in this diocese seek the will of God in all matters, including those relating to human sexuality; and

WHEREAS, we recognize in humility, as limited human beings, that there are differences among us in perceiving God's will relating to human sexuality; and

WHEREAS, it is diocesan policy that postulants and candidates for Holy Orders with the Diocese of East Tennessee engage in sexual intimacy only within the marriage relationship of a man and a woman, and that clergy in this diocese are not to bless same-sex unions, and

WHEREAS, there is a need and desire to continue to listen to each other, understand others' experiences and views, theological and otherwise; now therefore be it

RESOLVED that this diocese as a part of the general church joins its bishop in continuing to discern and follow the will of God; and be it further

RESOLVED that groups, as directed by the bishop, facilitate airing, examination and reconciliation of differing opinions on human sexuality so we can do God's work together, and that a report be made at the next annual convention; and be it further

RESOLVED that the people of this diocese be encouraged to serve God and God's people in all the ways to which they are called, even as they continue to seek God's will in the area of human sexuality.

EXPLANATION OF RESOLUTION: This resolution recognizes that deep, honestly held differences currently exist in the diocese on matters pertaining to human sexuality. This resolution is intended to provide viable mechanisms to further an intentional and accountable dialogue on human sexuality issues.
