Camp Billy Johnson is a one-week summer camp for underprivileged children
between the ages of 8 and 11 living in the Diocese of East Tennessee.
It is wholly staffed by the youth of the Diocese, with the exception
of five adults (two coordinators, one EMT, one spiritual advisor, and
one advisor).
The summer of 2000 marked the 21st year of Camp Billy Johnson. Eighteen
children were able to attend, with their hometowns split fairly evenly
between Chattanooga and Knoxville. The 19 youth counselors were from
13 cities and 9 parishes within the Diocese, while the 5 adult staff
were from 3 cities and represented 4 parishes.
As always, Camp took place at DuBose Conference Center in Monteagle,
TN. Highlights of the week included a bus trip to the University of
the South, the Memorial Cross, and All Saints Chapel, as well as an
instructional Eucharist led by the Rev. Chris Epperson.
Preparations for Camp 2001 began immediately after Camp 2000 ended
on August 5th. We are continuing to improve our website (campbillyjohnson.home.att.net)
and our quarterly newsletter is distributed to all parishes, former
& current counselors, donors, and Diocesan officers.
Camp Billy Johnson 2001 will take place at DuBose Conference Center
from July 15th to July 21st, 2001.
